Craigie Aitchison, CBE RSA RA

1926-2009. Scottish painter. After studying Law, he attended the Slade School of Fine Art in London (1952–4). His work is characterised by the use of intense, pure colour to describe shape and form in extremely spare compositions. His subject matter is traditional, featuring religious themes, landscapes, portraits and still-lifes. He travelled to Italy, where the clear light and natural landscapes had a large influence on his work. In 1988 he became a Member of the Royal Academy of Arts, London. In 2008 he had a solo exhibition at Cyril Gerber Fine Art, Glasgow.
