Sir William MacTaggart (1903-1981) was a Scottish painter known for his landscapes of France, Norway and Scotland, particularly East Lothian. He studied at Edinburgh College of Art, where he met fellow artists William Gillies, Anne Redpath, John Maxwell, William Crozier (who was a large influence on MacTaggart), and Adam Bruce Thomson.
He taught at Edinburgh School of Art in the 1930's and later became President of the Society of Scottish Artists and the Royal Scottish Academy. He was made a member of the RSA in 1948, a member of the Royal Academy, London, and was knighted in 1962.
