Tom H. Shanks RSW RGI PAI

Tom H. Shanks, RSW, RGI, PAI (1921-2020) was a master at capturing the grandeur and beauty of the Scottish landscape. On leaving school, he started his career as a designer with Templeton's Carpet Factory in Glasgow, exhibiting his early pieces in the company art club. As his skills developed he applied to Glasgow School of Art, where his talent was recognised, and he enrolled there full time. In 1950 after he graduated, Tom joined prestigious Edinburgh weavers, Dovecot Studios, as well as becoming a mural painter, stage designer and teacher.

He painted for over seventy years, mostly drawings and watercolour landscapes of the west highlands and islands. Visits to Skye had a profound effect on his work. He drew on his romantic memories and experiences of his many years enjoying the beauty of the lochs, mountains and seas, to create his atmospheric works. Tom had a unique skill in bringing to life the complexities of the weather and varied terrain of Scotland's hills, lochs, glens and coastal waterways.

Over the long period of time we worked with him, we were always impressed by the freshness of his work and his powerful ability to convey the effect that the landscape can have on you. The reality of the scene before him and the calm and thoughtful mood Tom creates is impressive and wide in his vision. He had numerous exhibitions at Gerber Fine Art in Glasgow, as well as at other places throughout Scotland, and he regularly took part in all the main Scottish annual exhibitions. His work is collected and admired by many, both in Scotland and further afield, and is in the collections of the Scottish Arts Council; Glasgow, Greenock and Dumbarton Councils as well as the House of Lords in London.
