Tom Hovell Shanks DA RSW RGI PAI 1921-2020 Centenary Exhibition

Marking the centenary of Tom Hovell Shank’s birth, in August Gerber Fine art are celebrating the life and work of Shanks who would have been 100 this year. On graduating from Glasgow School of Art in 1950, he started his career as a designer with the famous Templeton Carpet Company, he then spent 8 years with the prestigious weavers Dovecot Studios. For over 80 years he delighted viewers and collectors with his drawings and watercolours of the Scottish mountains, lochs and rivers, capturing the atmosphere, the essence of mystery and loneliness in wild headlands, mountains and moorlands, particularly of the West Highlands and Islands. He shared people’s love of the landscape and seascape on clear sunny, colourful days, but equally admired the scene in rainy, misty conditions.

He exhibited with Cyril Gerber Fine Art throughout his whole career and his work was admired and collected by many both in Scotland and abroad, and is held in numerous public collections including Scottish Arts Council; The Hunterian Museum & Art Gallery, Glasgow and the House of Lords, London.

This exhibition will celebrate his life of art, and will include work from early on in his career which demonstrates his superb draughtsmanship.
