1869-1956. Born London into a highly artistic family. Trained at Westminster School of Art and at the Academie Julian, Paris. He was an art critic and writer as well as an artist, and was a founder member of both the Camden Town Group and London Group. His work was particularly concerned with the theoretical complexities of painting. He worked in both oil and watercolour with his main subject matter being landscapes as well as coastal and bathing scenes. He was Principal at the Westminster School of Art from 1918-1934 and also taught at the Royal Academy, Reading University and Lancaster School of Arts & Crafts.
