She studied at Glasgow School of Art, together with the well known painter Joan Eardley, were they were two of a small group selected for special training by the Head of Drawing & Painting Hugh Adam Crawford. Both artists flourished under his experimental fast track treatment, and became close friends, developing a deep and lasting friendship. Although their styles were very different, they encouraged and supported each other, drew and painted together, and shared camping trips and family holidays. In 1941, as students, Sandeman and Eardley acquired a horse and caravan and travelled, sketched and painted around Loch Lomond. For many years, the two women regularly visited High Corrie on the Isle of Arran, renting an outhouse, "The Tabarnacle", as a studio. This exhibition features some of the delicate studies and drawings, works on paper, which she created there in preparation for her larger oils.

Margot Sandeman was born in Glasgow in 1922, the daughter of Archibald Sandeman, a self-taught water colourist, and Muriel Boyd, internationally known embroiderer who trained with Jessie Newbery at Glasgow School of Art. Winner of the RSA's prestigious Guthrie Award in 1958, and the Anne Redpath award in 1970. Also in 1970 she won a Scottish Arts Council Award, and in 1989 was the Scottish winner of the Laing Competition. Sandeman exhibited at The Royal Scottish Academy from 1946-1972, Cyril Gerber Fine Art, Compass Gallery, Glasgow; the Talbot Rice Gallery, Edinburgh; and the Lillie Art Gallery, Milngavie. She has exhibited in mixed exhibitions throughout Britain and in the USA, and is represented in public and private collections in Scotland and throughout the UK, including the National Gallery of Scotland.

Tom H Shanks RSW RGI PAI 1921-2020 Centenary Exhibition

Click here to view the exhibition

Marking the centenary of Tom Hovell Shank's birth, in July Gerber Fine art are celebrating the life and work of Shanks who would have been 100 this year. For over 80 years he delighted viewers and collectors with his drawings and watercolours of the Scottish mountains, lochs and rivers, capturing the atmosphere, the essence of mystery and loneliness in wild headlands, mountains and moorlands, particularly of the West Highlands and Islands. He shared people’s love of the landscape and seascape on clear sunny, colourful days, but equally admired the scene in rainy, misty conditions.

He exhibited with Cyril Gerber Fine Art throughout his whole career and his work was admired and collected by many both in Scotland and abroad, and is held in numerous public collections including Scottish Arts Council; The Hunterian Museum & Art Gallery, Glasgow and the House of Lords, London.

This exhibition will celebrate his life of art, and will include work from early on in his career which demonstrates his superb draughtsmanship.

A Spotlight on Jack Knox RSA RSW RGI

Click here to view the exhibition

The career of the artist Jack Knox spans over 5 decades. He studied at Glasgow School of Art and the Andre L'Hote Atelier, Paris, winning a string of prizes including the Carnegie Trust Travelling Scholarship, the Guthrie Award, several RSA awards, and the Scottish Arts Council Award. Knox, a 'Glasgow Boy' of the 1950's era, became a Senior Lecturer in Drawing and Painting at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art, Dundee where he taught for 16 years. He became Head of Painting at Glasgow School of Art in 1981 till 1992. Knox was an excellent example of an accomplished and committed artist who managed to bridge the proverbial 'generation gap' at each successful stage of his career. He was able to do this through his continuing interest and enthusiastic involvement of the interests and affairs of his colleagues, teaching staff and contemporaries, both at home and in the wider field of the changing Art Movement in Europe and America. He has inspired and influenced generations of new artists graduating under his watch, many of whom now have successful careers with international status. Amongst them, to name a few, are Jenny Saville, Alison Watt, Steven Campbell, Adrian Wiszniewski, Ken Currie and Stephen Conroy. Knox has had numerous solo exhibitions throughout the UK and further afield. His group exhibitions include Chicago, Warsaw, Brussels, New York, Dusseldorf, Vienna, Sao Paulo and Sarajevo. A regular exhibitor in The New Charing Cross Gallery, Compass Gallery and Gerber Fine Art, Glasgow, since their inception. Jack had several solo exhibitions, and we continue to represent his estate. Works in public collections include Aberdeen; Dundee; Edinburgh; Kirkcaldy; Glasgow; Manchester; Sao Paulo, Brazil; L.A. and many others. It became a recognised genre towards the end of the Middle Ages, and was particularly prevalent from the seventeenth to the nineteenth century. The paintings from this period commonly portray seafaring at its most dangerous, with themes ranging from dramatic shipwrecks to explosive naval battles.

Traditional marine art reflected the importance of overseas trade and naval power, and for centuries the human relationship with the sea and all things maritime has inspired and been recorded by artists. The sea, unknown and feared, was the dangerous element over which the world's trade was transported and national power was extended, and the ship was the creation that made it all possible. Kings and admirals sought to have their ships illustrated and their successful battles recorded. Shipping merchants wanted their favourite ships immortalised, and later, paintings and posters were needed to sell shipping lines to the public.

From 1673 onwards, Dutch painters, with their new and naturalistic ways of painting the sea and ships’ sails, brought specialist marine art to Britain. The sea and seaside were also recurrent themes for artists of the Newlyn School, led by Stanhope Forbes, which founded a movement early in the 20th century, concerned with social realism, among the fishing communities of Cornwall, with emphasis on strong drawing and painting skills. The traditional task of the marine artist was to portray ships framed by harbours, or the settings for sea-battles. Their work concerned itself with the building of ships and boats, naval fleets and beaches and harbours; with seas and storms, fish and seabirds.

Today the sea is often depicted by contemporary artists as a playground. Early traditional scenes of the lives and industry of fisherfolk and their communities are replaced with paintings of modern shipping, as specialised marine painters continue to create tranquil boating scenes, colourful seascapes and sporting activities on the water as well as the modern heavy industry of oil exploration and ship ‘portraits’.

Our selection includes the work of a number of classical marine artists alongside the work of several contemporary artists for whom the sea is the main source of inspiration.

The Drawing Show 2021

Click here to view the exhibition

"Drawing is a vital part of every creative process.
